Your Website Is Invisible: The 5 Blockers Killing Your Indexing (and the 5-Minute Fix)

October 23, 2026 · Nova Stories · Tools

You built the website. It's live. You type the name into Google and… nothing. Not page ten. Not anywhere. Most new sites don't fail at SEO — they fail at being found at all. Search engines never saw the pages, or saw them and walked away. Here are the five blockers we keep finding on brand-new sites, what each one costs you, and how long each takes to fix.

The 5 indexability blockers

1. robots.txt is blocking crawlers

One stray Disallow: / line — often left over from a staging site or a template — tells every search crawler to stay out. We check this live: if your robots.txt bans everything, nothing else matters until you fix it. Fix time: 60 seconds.

2. No sitemap (or a sitemap nobody can read)

A sitemap is the map you hand the crawler. No sitemap means crawlers discover pages by luck — through links from other sites, which a brand-new site doesn't have. An outdated sitemap full of 404s is barely better. Fix time: a few minutes with any sitemap generator.

3. noindex tags you didn't know about

A <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag or an X-Robots-Tag: noindex header tells search engines "don't list this page" — and plenty of templates and page builders ship with it set on drafts, then forget to unset it. Your page can be perfectly crawlable and still never appear in results. Fix time: one line of HTML.

4. No HTTPS

Plain HTTP sites get flagged as "not secure," rank worse, and some crawlers deprioritize them. In 2026 there's no excuse — free certificates take minutes on any major host. Fix time: depends on your host, usually under 30 minutes.

5. No llms.txt — invisible to AI search

Search is changing: AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) increasingly are search. The llms.txt convention — a plain-text file at your site root describing what your site is and where its content lives — is how you make your site legible to that new layer of search. Most sites don't have one yet. Fix time: five minutes with the right generator.

Run the check on our tool and you get all six tests (the five above plus a homepage reachability check) as a 0–5 indexability score, live, against your real URL — not a guess.

How IndexNow instant submission actually works

The old model is: publish, wait, hope a crawler wanders by. IndexNow flips that. It's a protocol where your site tells search engines "this URL changed, come look" instead of waiting to be discovered. The flow, in plain English:

  1. Generate a key. A unique text string that proves you own the site.
  2. Put the key file at your site root. Something like yoursite.com/a3f9…key.txt. The search engine checks it once, like a handshake.
  3. Submit your URLs. Homepage, sitemap URLs, new pages — one call to the IndexNow API per URL (or batched).
  4. Crawlers get notified immediately instead of on their own schedule.

Our tool generates the key file for download, then submits your homepage and sitemap URLs to api.indexnow.org in one click.

The honest Google limits (read this before you pay anyone for "guaranteed indexing")

Here's what we'd be lying not to tell you: no tool can guarantee Google indexing. IndexNow is consumed by Bing, Yandex, Naver, and Seznam — it notifies them fast and reliably. Google runs its own crawl scheduling; instant submission doesn't override it. For Google, the honest lane is still: Search Console verification, sitemap submission there, and URL Inspection → "Request indexing" for key pages, plus content worth indexing.

Anyone selling you "guaranteed first-page Google in 24 hours" is selling you something that doesn't exist. What does exist is removing every blocker you control so crawlers — Google's included — have zero excuses. That's what the tool does.

This is the start of a push: we're getting this tool seen by whatever means necessary, because indexing is the bottleneck nobody talks about. Every story we publish, every page we ship, goes through it first — including this one. Next up: llms.txt generation built in, so the AI-search layer is covered too.
