Bitcoin Slips Below $80K on a Thin Weekend — and $835M of Leverage Gets Wiped

October 25, 2026 · Nova Stories · Market news

Yesterday Bitcoin held $80,000 through two days of ETF selling. This morning it didn't. Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 to a multi-week low as reports of U.S. staff evacuations in the Middle East amid Iranian attack threats hit a thin weekend market — and the drop wiped out roughly $835 million of leveraged positions in 24 hours. General information only — not financial advice.

Bitcoin — Sunday, October 25, 2026 (morning, CDT)
Intraday low: about $79,057 (Binance) · Trading around $79,500–$79,800 at writing
24h liquidations: about $835M · ~200,000 traders liquidated, ~83% longs
Ether: below $2,300 (first sub-$2,300 print in two months) · Solana: under $100
U.S. spot Ether ETF flows Oct 14–22: −$485M

Why a weekend dip hits harder than a weekday one

Weekend crypto markets trade with fewer participants and thinner order books, so the same amount of selling moves the price further. That is the mechanical part of this morning's story, and it matters more than any single headline: when the geopolitical news broke, there were simply fewer buyers standing in the way. Ether, XRP, and Solana fell 3–4% alongside Bitcoin, per Basis Desk's morning edition — the usual pattern when risk-off hits a thin tape, with the alt majors falling harder than Bitcoin itself. Hokanews puts the daily losses at ETH −3.7% and SOL −3.4%, against about −2% for Bitcoin.

That distinction — Bitcoin down ~2%, majors down more — is the shape of a risk-off move, not a Bitcoin-specific one. When traders de-risk, they sell the most volatile holdings first. It is also why the liquidation numbers look so dramatic: CoinGlass data cited by TalkMarkets shows roughly $835 million liquidated in 24 hours, with Bitcoin-related liquidations alone over $235 million and long positions accounting for about 83% of the total. Leverage built up during the calm gets flushed in one move, and the flush itself pushes prices further — a loop that runs until the leveraged longs are gone.

The ETF picture behind the weekend

The weekend drop did not come out of nowhere. U.S. spot Ether ETFs saw $485 million in net outflows between October 14 and 22, per Farside data cited by Hokanews — institutional money had already been heading for the exits before the weekend headlines. And as yesterday's story covered, Bitcoin ETFs lost $635 million on October 22 and another $137.9 million on October 23. Two weeks of ETF selling plus a geopolitical shock plus a thin weekend tape is a combination, not a single cause — and anyone selling you one cause is oversimplifying.

It is also worth stating what the weekend did not show. CoinCodex's 06:00 UTC snapshot on October 25 still had Bitcoin at $80,598, with total market cap at $2.70 trillion, up 0.38% on the day — and Threshold Network Token up 31.68% led the top-200 gainers while Monero was coin of the day at $610.07, up 5.04%. Even on a red weekend, strength rotated into select names. A market-wide risk-off move and individual strength can both be true at once.

What to actually watch next

Three things will matter more than this weekend's headlines. First, whether the $80,000 level gets reclaimed quickly or becomes resistance — the difference between a weekend flush and a real breakdown is usually decided in the first weekday sessions, when full liquidity returns. Second, the Federal Reserve's rate decision on October 28, which was already the week's main scheduled event before any of this. Third, the $11.69 billion options expiry on October 30, which tends to pin prices around big strike levels into expiry and then release them. Until those pass, the honest read is narrow: a thin weekend amplified a real shock, leverage got flushed, and the market is now waiting for weekday buyers to show whether they agree with the lower price.

⚠️ What this story does not claim

A dip below $80,000 is not a crash call, and a liquidation flush is not a bottom signal. Geopolitical headlines move fast and reverse faster, and weekend prices are the least reliable prices of the week. We publish the numbers — the low, the liquidations, the flows — so you can watch whether weekday trading confirms or erases them.

Sources, all checked this morning: Basis Desk morning edition (October 25) for the sub-$80,000 break and the evacuation reports; TalkMarkets/CoinGlass for the ~$835 million liquidation figure and the ~$79,057 intraday low; Hokanews/Farside for the sub-$2,300 ether print, sub-$100 Solana, and the $485 million Ether ETF outflows; CoinCodex for the 06:00 UTC snapshot ($80,598 BTC, $2.70T market cap). Our earlier coverage — Bitcoin holds $80K through two days of ETF selling — is the other half of this weekend's story.
